Mogadishu (HOL) — Somalia on Tuesday welcomed a memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran, describing it as a positive step toward de-escalation, dialogue and regional stability.

In a statement, Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the agreement could help reduce tensions and promote peace.

“The Federal Republic of Somalia welcomes the Memorandum of Understanding between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran as a positive step toward de-escalation, dialogue, and regional stability,” the ministry said.

“Somalia commends both parties for choosing diplomacy and engagement to reduce tensions and promote peace.”

Somalia also praised the roles of Pakistan, Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye in supporting the diplomatic effort.

The ministry further recognized what it described as the engagement of U.S.

President Donald J.

Trump in advancing efforts toward peace.

Somalia said it hopes the understanding will be implemented in good faith and contribute to protecting civilian lives, safeguarding freedom of navigation and preventing further escalation.

The federal government reaffirmed its support for diplomacy, respect for international law and the peaceful resolution of disputes.

Somalia said it welcomes all efforts that promote peace, security and stability in the Middle East, the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region.

The statement comes as Somalia continues to emphasize the importance of regional stability, particularly because of its strategic location along the Gulf of Aden and near key Red Sea shipping routes.
