Leftist presidential candidate Ivan Cepeda has officially conceded to populist Abelardo de la Espriella, confirming a right-wing victory in Colombia.
Although the preliminary results showed a slim margin of less than one percent, Cepeda chose to wait for an official judicial audit before acknowledging the outcome.
The National Registry reported that initial counts were nearly one hundred percent accurate, despite concerns from outgoing President Gustavo Petro.
Petro had previously alleged foreign meddling and systemic fraud, specifically citing an endorsement from Donald Trump as a breach of democratic integrity.
Cepeda’s decision to concede marks a departure from Petro’s combative stance and aims to promote national stability.
While the presidency remains with the right, Cepeda is expected to transition into a significant opposition leadership role within the Senate.
This move concludes a highly polarized election cycle defined by disputes over electronic software and the reliability of the counting process, shifting the political focus toward the incoming administration.
